About Paço dos Duques de Bragança
Begun in the 1420s by Afonso, first Duke of Bragança and illegitimate son of King João I, the Paço dos Duques is unlike anything else in Portugal. Its builder had travelled northern Europe, and he raised a palace of steep roofs, a forest of tall brick chimneys and a great banquet hall — a Burgundian manor transplanted onto a granite hill in the Minho.
The Bragança family would go on to become Portugal's last royal house, and their first home still holds the collections of that rise: Flemish and Pastrana tapestries, medieval weapons and armour, Portuguese and Chinese porcelain, and period furniture arranged across two floors around a central courtyard.
It stands a few steps from Guimarães Castle and the little Romanesque church of São Miguel — the ground where, tradition says, Portugal itself was born. To walk the palace is to stand at the start of the story of a nation and an empire.
